2002 S80 fan running w/ engine OFF

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 S80 fan running w/ engine OFF

Post by ashly.ydr »

So, my car has done this "thing" for quite a while now, especially when I leave her out in that hot, oven-like sun. First time it happened, I was at a friend's house and they thought my car could come alive...and I just let them believe it. Over winter, I forgot about it and never took the time to research it. It was hot again yesterday, and there it was. So...I turned my car off, took the key out of the ignition, got out and closed the door, locked the car, and went in the store for about 30 minutes. Now...I unlocked the car, got in, and sat down to find air blowing out of the vents. It wasn't ice-cold air, but it kept the air circulating and it wasn't deathly hot in there.
So, my question is, is this normal? If so, will someone explain? Or is my car just really weird (not like I didn't already know that) and is cooling itself off? That was a joke, don't think I'm a complete idiot, please. ;) Thanks in advance!

This feature is called "afterblow". It runs the cabin fan to dry out the evaporator fins so that you don't build up mold, mildew, and other smelly junk on there. It also helps to keep the evaporator core from rotting out, like lots of Volvos are known for.

Basically - yes, normal.

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."
