2001 V70t5 High beams don't stay on; no fog lights

Post by Exkodaker »

As the header says the highballs won't stay on. I have no fog lights and the message sections of the instrument cluster are very dim. I liked in the history and past threads but there didn't seem to be a definitive answer. The light switch is in the vertical position. I have checked all fuses. Is this a switch issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Thanks
Blair
PS. I tried to post earlier but I am new to this and did something wrong

turn on the headlight switch, in 0 position nothing much works. daytime running lights make it looks like headlights are on when they aren't

Vertical position is ON - So that's not an issue

It could be an issue with the switchgear itself.

Earlier models had a recall on these.

Whilst yours may not be under the recall it sounds like a similar issue with similar symptoms in the later posts described.

Good way to test before chasing everything through would be to try a new switch - many are the same as other models.
There's also some homemade solutions - definitely worth checking to confirm or rule it out.
Hope this helps

Thanks. How do you pop that switch out? And is it something that can possibly be repaired like a circuit board? Thanks again.

Not sure with your car.
On the 02 s60 you open the fuse flap cover on the side/end of the dash -it's quite large
Put your hand behind the switch gear and push it out.
(There's tabs on top and bottom)
I'd expect it's the same on yours.

And yes, if it is the switchgear that's the problem it can be repaired. Just be careful when prying the unit open.
Double check all tabs etc to avoid breaking them.

I have the same problem. Dash lights and radio lights went dim. Headlight switch doesn't do anything, nor the dash dimmer switch nor rear fog light. High beams don't stay on, just go on momentarily when stalk is pulled forwards. 2001 V70 2.4T, also similar story in this post:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/vie ... hp?t=48731

Situation didn't change when I removed the headlight switch module, so seems like it was not working. Today I put in a used module from ebay. Initially everything was the same, then I switched it from "on" (vertical) to parking lights, and suddenly the dash and radio lights came back - the part I have been missing most. But, nothing else happens, can't turn off the lights, use high beams, or fog light.

So, anyone have an idea what's going on? Possibilities I can think of are:
1. New/used headlight module is also bad, just a fluke that the dash lights came back. Probably the most likely but I don't want to believe it because I don't want to hassle with getting yet another used one, or risking $200+ to try a new one.
2. Wiring issue between headlight module and central controller. Seems unlikely but possible. And a hassle to get into.
3. Central controller is bad in some really weird way where this is the only problem? (Along with flaky driver's power window switch?) Seems really unlikely to have only those things go wrong and everything else work.

Any better ideas? Ways to find the problem?

Thanks!
