I plan to go look at a possible project and would like to know others views and advice as I am not familiar with the P1 cars.
The car in question is a 2005 V50 T5 AWD manual trans with approx. 150kkm on it (about 90k miles)
The issues the current owner claims the car has are:
1) Power steering hose has failed. I am assuming the hose and possibly the pump may have to be replaced if it has been run with no oil in the system. There is a supposed good used pump for sale from a 2008 S40 with 16k miles on it. Are they the same?
2) The rear AWD system they say: 'The car is all wheel drive but the rear fluids need changing as it is preventing the AWD system from engaging. Sometimes it will work but not all the time.' Any suggestions on what the issue may be? Could it be just a filter and fluid issue or something bigger (does the Haldex system have a pump?)?
Appreciate the input as always.
Car price is $4000 CDN (about $3200 US).
Neil.

Oh, I also forgot. The owner also claims that when the steering hose has set and 'immobiliser' warning light on. Are these 2 issues related at all or possible?

First it needs is diagnostics with VIDA.
As for Haldex is the same as on other models. So pump, pressure sensor DEM module it self can cause this.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer

Always appreciate your wisdom doublebug!
I realise that the best thing is to use Vida, so I plan to take my Dice unit to the car when looking at it, but as I am not particularly confident in using Vida it helps to know what may come up. Unfortunately since buying my Chinese copy, my cars have been fairly good and had no need for it!
My worry with the newer cars is the added complexity and I don't have any experience on the Haldex system. I do recall on reading of some issues with the control system, and the pump, but never worked on them.
Is the owners claim that the immobiliser warning came on when the steering hose broke a legitimate claim or is there no relation between the 2 issues?

Bad DEM module can cause that. But that is just guesswork.
Just pull out the codes so there is some information to analyse.
Without codes that is just bla bla bla.

Had a look at this car finally today and it ended up being a gong show. IT is one of those cases where a best buddy decided to move back to UK and left a piece of lawn art for his friend to sell. Friend has not been told much about the car and is not car 'wise'.
First thing no battery. This was found in the passenger foot well. Put in place but the -ve connector is too large to tighten down?!! Managed to jamb it in place with a screw, and found the battery was flat. So waist of time for me and the guys friend as no way to diagnose the vehicle.
Add to that the owner was a smoker (car stinks) and he apparently liked to 'tinker' with the car. I found the steering column casing lying in the back of the car as he had re-fitted the old steering wheel. This may be the immobiliser issue if the clock-spring is damaged?
Also the air box was also in the back of the car with a large piece broken out of it, the engine ECU is just hanging in the engine bay. Not sure if it attached to the air box. Does it need to be earthed to work?
Finally agreed to help the friend as he does not live there, and I have brought the battery home to try and see if it will take a charge over night and we will reconvene if it works. Really feel for the poor friend as I have been left by a friend in similar position. I have lost interest in the car, but I will help the guy to see if we can at least get it to a point where it can be moved or started. The SRS warning is also on.
This car may have potential but with the smoker smell it is not for me. Still can't get rid of the smell in my daughters car she bought 5 years ago, even after multiple steam cleans and A/C bombs run through it.
I did find that the 2008 S40 FWD power steering pump does work for the 2005 V50 AWD.
Also found that good old Xemodex sell a repair kit for the Haldex system with a reconditioned controller, oil pump and filter for $800 CDN with a lifetime warranty on the controller. A new controller is $1500 US alone!
Any suggestions for the loose battery connector? Can I uses a small piece of foil to pad it out so it will tighten down, or any other suggestions?
Neil.

Thanks again doublebug. You are a very wise man and I appreciate your help.
So a damaged clock spring does not affect the immobiliser, but what problems would it cause?
I have found a possible solution for the loose battery terminal. It is called a battery post shim, which is basically a lead cap that fits over the battery post to make it wider. Now just have to find someone that sells it locally!
