Low speed wobble *Pics added*

Post by drnh »

Hi everyone.

Hopefully i can pick your brains.

I have a 2007 C30 2.4 D5 Geartronic.

I have a low speed wobble up to around 20mph. I had a major wobble but have had both drive shafts and lower arms replaced which has improved things by 90%.

Wheels are fine and tyres are new so that's been taken out of it. Tracking has also been done.

My next thought leads me to the engine mounts. When i'm in drive, foot on the brake there seems to be some vibration coming in to the cabin. Not loads but more than there used to be, i'm sure of that.

Has anyone a diagram they cold share as to where the mounts are? All i can see is the top drivers side one which was replaced 12 months ago and that's fine.

To explain the wobble. I can feel it throughout the car when accelerating very slowly from zero to around 20mph. It's mild but certainly there.

Otherwise the car drives perfectly.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Daz :D

Although for an S40- should be the same: Left side motor mount: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?192646
Right side motor mount: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?145049
Lower torque mount: https://www.fcpeuro.com/blog/posts/how- ... a-p1-volvo
There is a lot of information and opinion about this lower mount- that the Volvo ones wear out by 30-40K miles if driven on tough roads.
I changed mine out with an E-Focus mount (better and for cheaper too) and it was not hard to do.. in fact, there is no need to completely take the mount off of the car...just the center bolt and the entire mount can be maneuvered with a piece of wood under the oil pan and a jack...as long as you go easy. If you're having a wobble though, I would suspect one or both of the side mounts. See if you can see engine movement with the hood raised.

You're an absolute star!! Those links will be massively helpful.

I have looked for the lower mount but just couldn't see anything that resembled that. I'll have another look though.

The others i will also check out. I'm virtually certain it has to be an engine mount of some sort, it just 'feels" like movement of weight. I've also notied that there seems to be more vibration coming through the car when in drive and foot on the brake.

Huge thanks for the reply, really appreciate your help.

Just a follow up

I've had the car on a ramp and I can't see the large lower torque mount many of you are upgrading.

My car is a D5 Auto and the only lower mount I see is on the left hand side looking at the car from the front?

Is this right? Seems like a small mount for such a big engine.

I've also noticed the wobble is there right up to 40mph and gets faster with speed but less intense.

I've added a few photos under the car in case anyone can shed some more light on it as to where I should be looking.

Thanks very much

Very odd- it's as if I can almost see the place for that lower mount to go but it's not there...is the hole on the left (last picture) appear to bolt up to more than that piece- like a subframe above it? If so, maybe someone took that mount off and didn't replace it? Now, that beefy mount you have under the car- I've never seen anything like it but then again, yours is a D5- something we don't see here in the U.S., I don't believe.
