Thank you very much both of you for your answers.
I had a guy put in a tranny about 2 months ago and that is when I noticed the leak.
I am just going to remove it and take a look if there is a chemical seal or a regular seal and go from there.
I was simply hoping that someone would know what type of seal is located there before I take it apart. But like you said, looks like there are very few people that have removed this part..
Thanks again

Just wondering if you solved the mystery...the volvo mechanic i bought my '95 850 from fixed a leak at that location by slathering on a pink sealant compound...and it looks like he used it quite liberally. Im betting it's the factory stuff reference previously...whatever, it works. Hopefully you've found your solution. (Sorry about the late post...been away.)

Hopefully he'll post an update on what he found; I'd like to know the answer also.
All of my 850s have the same pinkish gasket material also.

"cyclmck" Since you have removed that pan and sealed it before, did you have to drain your entire tranny?
I figured if I hoist it up in the front, there should not be much tranny fluid inside that cap because of the leaning of the car towards the back but maybe I am mistaking?
Another question I am trying to get answered:
Is it bad to top of the tranny with Dextron III even though it currently more than likely has another type of oil in there? (the guy who added it a while back said he used Valvoline standard tranny fluid).
I bought some RTF Sealant and I am getting ready to do it this week.
I will post an update as soon as I take a stab at it.
Thanks,

Thanks,
The pan is pretty much at the bottom of the transmission so when you take it off you will lose around 4 quarts, if you you have the car raised up in the front you might only lose 2 or 3 quarts. These transaxles are made to run on dexron, so you will be fine to use standard Dexron III ATF.
Thank you for your answer.
I guess I will drain it first then.
So no problem mixing different tranny fluids then?
(I will drain out about 4 quarts of whatever fluid is in there and put in 4 quarts of Dexron III)
I have never used RTF Sealant before but I guess the directions on the bottle is ok, right? No special tricks? (I am planning on using brake cleaner for cleaning before applying the sealant).

Sure it is possible, but I looked at the cover yesterday and it is sealed with a pinkish liquid sealant.. I guess I will know in a couple of days.
But I know the dipstick goes in there so i would assume it has tranny fluid in there?
