I replaced brakes w/aftermarket brake pads, no issues for about a month afterwards. Suddenly, the driver-side caliper began locking - the problem is intermittent and I can hear a slightly friction between the pad and the rotor when the caliper is not locked. Was it coincidence that these symptoms started after replacing the pads? The caliper is not leaking, the car has 55K miles

I had this problem too, go ahead and change them out with some from FCP Groton, they come fully loaded with new pads for around $60/ea. It is an easy job, and maybe check your front hoses at the same time if you haven't in awhile. That caliper will wear those pads right out, could warp your rotor and will make your fuel mileage go down significantly.

When you changed the pads did you lubricate the pins?
When I change pads I run a very thin coat of grease on the pins and also on the mating surface between the caliper and the mount.

I wouldn't expect this on a newer car, but I have had a couple of 20+ year old cars where a brake hose deteriorates on the inside and acted as a oneway valve.
The brake fluid gets pushed through the hose by the master cylinder, but the hose collaspes when their is no pressure and traps fluid at the caliper causing the brake to hold.
