Hi,
New to the group, searched for answers but found nothing, hoping for some advice. Recently purchased a 1991 240 sedan with an auto. trans (AW70). Car runs great but shift lever seems to be misaligned. The car will start in park if the lever is pushed as forward as it goes. It does not start in neutral. Reverse lights will work if I slightly push the shift lever while in reverse. If I let go of the lever I still have reverse but lose the lights. There is no shift lock, I can go from park to any gear without depressing the button on top of the lever or stepping on the brake. And lastly, the lever will not move to first gear.
I've put in a new neutral safety switch and tinkered with the adjustment and replace one linkage bushing (other was fine), but still the same. Got a feeling my problem is somewhere at the bottom of the shift lever, within that linkage, but hoping someone has an idea.
Thanks,
Jack
'91 240 shifter problem...not aligned
An update on my problem......adjusted the linkage and got the alignment straightened out. The car now starts in P and N and back up lights are working as they should. The shifter still operates without having to depress the shifter button and I don't need to use the brake.

I know 1993 has a park shift-lock out until brake is depressed...
