2000 S70 Kilometer to MPH Dash Swap Help

Post by Hooter »

Hi guys. New member, first post. Just picked up a 2000 S70 base with the 2.4 and automatic. The car came from the factory with a kilometer only instrument cluster. My buddy I bought it from didn't mind it, but I'd like to swap it over to a mph cluster. I just picked up one from a 98 in a salvage yard and the car doesn't like it. The tach doesn't work and causes the car to run like heck. Swapped back in the kilometer dash and back to normal.

Do I need to look for a cluster from a 2000 or am I stuck with the kilometer cluster?

I'm pretty impressed with the car. It has the equivalent of 230,000 miles and runs and drives great. It's had a recent timing belt/water pump and I've serviced everything else on it. Just like to get it reading in the English system if possible. Thanks in advance and apologize if this has been covered a million times and I've just not found an old thread on this.

I really have no idea but you might be in for a dealer download. In '98 the S70 was a motronic ECU system and much easier to deal with. From '99, it was no longer motronic and the change became much more software and dealer dependent.

The '98 cluster is not going to work unless you completely convert the car to a '98 ECU / throttle body system. Although they look outwardly identical the '99 and 2000 instrument cluster is the key component in the identity of the car. The way the whole system works on 99+ model year cars is that all of the CAN bus components are put together and then they are complied into a singular software package. Even if you put in a '99 or 2000 cluster for another car into your car it will not run since the software package won't be compiled to the identity of the cluster.

It may be possible to extract the identity of your cluster and have it flashed into another cluster but I'm not sure. Xemodex would be a decent place to start your inquiry into the feasibility of that. Beyond that you will likely need a brand new cluster and the dealership will have to burn the VIN number into it and generate an entirely new software download for the car. The keys and remotes may or may not transfer to the new identity so they may have to be replaced as well. If they have to create an entire new software package then the existing keys and remotes are worthless since they don't have the identifying code number stickers to plug into the software order screen. Those number cannot be retrieved from an existing unit.

One would think that the existing mileage (in km) could be converted into miles and burned into a MPH cluster but I don't know how that squares up with federal and state anti-tampering laws. Hopefully the car got "federalized" somewhere along the line since it was obviously originally intended to go to another country. I think Volvo's federalize easily but on many cars it is nearly impossible to get a grey market car through the system.

This is maybe the easiest solution- replace just the fact of the speedo...or you can take it out and carefully "paint on" the MPH that corresponds to the KPH. That said, you aren't going to have the computer read down how many miles are left to an empty tank or how many MPG you're getting. Like Lee said, an inquiry to XMODEX is a great idea. Another option is to ask the dealer in your area. If another '99 or 2000 instrument cluster could be re-flashed, that might be a good solution, but many dealers don't want to re-flash used parts and won't plus there's the issue of VIN#, keys, etc...

Thanks guys. Looks like not an easy solution. I'd actually be good with just putting a mph overlay on top of the kilometers. Does anyone sell just these or is it pretty simple removing from my other cluster I've already got?

Edit - just found the white overlays for $20 through Amazon. I could live with these.
