1999 Volvo S70 Rear Bump Stops.

Hello guys

I had my rear shocks done on my 99 S70 about a week ago by this one private mechanic I found on Craigslist. He installed both of the shocks for $200. But he said that he could not install the bump stops. Are the bump stops really that hard to install. I took the car to a shop today and they said that they would charge me $300 labor to get both of them installed. I can see just my looking underneath that my old bump stops are totally worn out. Can the new shocks were prematurely if my bump stops are bad.

Piece of cake to install rear bump stops, given you don't have AWD.

I can probably do the job in 30 minutes. 15 minutes if on a lift.

Support the rear subframe, undo two nuts at the bottom of the shocks, undo two nuts for both springs, take the springs out, replace the bump stop inside the springs and then reinstall everything. Seriously, 4 nuts cost $300 labor... that's a ridiculous price.

I would say your mechanic finished the job and then realized he had forgotten the bump stops. There's an old trick to getting them to stick back up at the top if they ever fall down too- a bit of a pain, but it can be done.

You're right. There are two bolts and one nut per shock install. I can probably do the job in 15 minutes or less.

I totally agree, these are both simple jobs, can be done very cheaply and very well by a knowledgable DIYer.

One has gone off with de pin in perfect condition. Im ready for the pain. Please explain.

It's a good way to start discovering your car. As said upper, 2 bolts in the car, 1 under, and that's it. I've replace mine last june. No special technical knowledge (to me) required, just a some wrenches. Also a good entry to create its own toolbox...

My car is a 1998 and I just did the bump stops. It was surprisingly easy.
First, here is what I saw when I went under the car to do some brake work. The stop had fallen and was just banging around the spring.

The new stop is easy to install once you get the spring off. Loosen the rear shock, remove the nut on the lower mount, and then you can lift out the spring. To install the new stop, I used a socket extension to bank on the pin of the clip, which expands the other side and fastens it.

Here's what got replaced. I'd say over 23 years is way beyond the expected lifespan. As you can also see, I replaced the rubber spring seats. May as well while I am doing this work.
