Please help identify this part (1994 Volvo 850 Turbo)

Post by southofmotown »

Can someone please identify this part (I'd call it an air box)? I'm still getting codes for an O2 sensor, which I replaced, but I'm wondering if this cracked part is causing a vacuum leak that is triggering a code for the O2 sensor. Any suggestions on how to repair this thing? Thank you! Todd

That's actually part of the radiator fan shroud. And it wouldn't cause an O2 sensor code. As for fixing it, replace it or tape would do the trick.

It simply vents air over to the ECU box

It's basically an air box, all it does is send cooler air from the front to the computers. Won't set any codes but should be fixed/ taped to get as much cool air to the computers as possible. Will end up a bit more costly then just some CEL code.

Disconnect what you need for access, clean the area around the crack and use a good epoxy or other adhesive to seal the entire breach.
Always first off the line, while all the cool people are still staring at their phones.

Thank you. So as far as the O2 sensor code (PO131 and PO137) is concerned....if I've already replaced the downstream sensor, I assume I should check for vacuum leaks? (I don't know when the code started, but I tested it today because I noticed some power loss...and there it was again. And it's been a couple of months since I replaced the O2 sensor. The code had gone away after I replaced the sensor.) Thanks!

Many people go through 02 sensors when it's often some type of vacuum leak or faulty MAF sensor...spray some carb cleaner or some other flamable stuff around your vacuum hoses with your car running and when the car's engine races from your spraying, you'll find your leak if it's not clearly visible. Sometimes leaks are at the front intake manifold. Have you had it off and back on recently? Oh, and what brand 02 sensor did you end up putting in your car?
