Can We Reset Just One OBD2 Monitor? 1998 v70

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

In this car, 1998 v70, is it possible for some tester or computer connected to the OBD2 connector to reset just one of the many monitors, and leave the other (several) ones alone?

Thanks.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Yes its possible with the right hardware.

Hi,

Ok thanks, since it can be done then it was done.
The only other way was that the car reset itself :-)

Just keep in mind that although its possible, in one of your other posts a moderator rationalized as to why your car's monitors might be incomplete. He mentioned something about an O2 sensor wire or something to that effect. If the monitor incomplete was due to the battery being disconnected you would have seen CODE displayed on your radio. I think you should just drive it for now and not worry. Let it do its thing and if there are any issues I'm sure they will present themselves. The self diagnostics are autonomous and there are a lot of variables to where, when, how much etc. A few drive cycles will probably set things in order. 8)

Hi again,

Yes, well in the mean time i have to wonder what went wrong that caused this in the first place.
I dont see how changing the radiator can reset the monitor, unless they accidentally disconnected the oxy sensor, and if they did, then it might not be working right now and that could harm the cat converter.
Even if not, if it is still disconnected then it might bring up a trouble code and cause a CEL, when before it was just fine, all fine.

Any way to check the oxy sensor right away without waiting for that silly computer to do it?

I also dont believe that the customer should have to fix or troubleshoot their car because of something that went wrong during the repair at the garage. Nor should they be forced to wait for some stupid test to perform itself. Granted, if something was replaced that affected that system, that's a different story, like if the oxy sensor was replaced then i might expect a delay in the test or something. But even then i cant see it going back to 'inc' all by itself.

So far no one has been able to explain exactly how it can go back to 'inc' all by itself without someone resetting it. Guessing that it did it by itself for some unknown reason is not an explanation. The only explanation would be a description of the mechanism that causes this. For example, "every time the oxy sensor is disconnected the monitor goes back to 'inc'".

If i could somehow test the oxy sensor myself right away though that might help.

Hey is it possible to turn 'off' the oxy sensor with a computer or test device in the ODB2 connector?

I realize that i should wait to see what happens, but the longer i wait the stranger it seems.
I guess i could see something going wrong during the install and they just dont want to admit it, and whatever it was caused them to reset the montor(s). In that case i am stuck waiting.

From now on i will tell them to check it before and after they release the car back to me after a repair.
I will also check it before and after, same day, 10 minutes before, 10 minutes after i get the car back :-)

On the plus side, the new rad works good and he seems kind of honest. He could have charged me for another trans cooler line and i would have never known it was not really bad, but he did not, and that would have been another almost 200 bucks. I guess i did get a little paranoid when i saw that those two friggin monitors were reset :-)
It was nice to hear yours and others opinions and ideas here on this board.

So i think if we could figure out a way to test the oxy sensor right away that would help a lot, and if not then i have to wait.

Thanks.

Hope this helps: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=11373

I know you don't want to wait for the car to reset things...but there is the readiness drive cycle- sort of a pain but it often takes care of things that are not necessarily broken if the battery has been disconnected: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?p=56234

Hi,

That is interesting but i dont think that is possible around here because there is no place i can go that will allow me to drive the car in a manner that haphazardly. So it looks like i'll just have to wait it out.

Your 98 V70 has known EPA issues along with lots of different makes and models during the transition years to OBII. In Pa I get automatic pass on emissions on my 98 S70.

Hi,

Well, i looked it up on a gov site and all i could find was that it was exempt as far as 2 incomplete monitors are allowed, with no CEL, but i dont think 3 incompletes are allowed on this car, but i could be wrong i guess.
I saw one year or model that allowed 4 incompletes. They may have changed it since i last looked too.

But keep in mind i am not in PA i am in NJ.

Thank you.
