Exhaust for 97 850 GLT wagon

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Exhaust for 97 850 GLT wagon

Post by HareBall »

I went to Quick-O Muffler on Magnolia, here in Knoxville and got a price on a complete 2 1/2" exhaust, from turbo out the back with new catalytic converter.
The price was $360.00. I have been told they are the place to go around here.
I assume this is a good price. Sounds reasonable to me anyway.

Sounds too cheap to be any good to be honest.

Get a 3" down pipe to a 2.5" cat back.

Make SURE they're using mandrel bent stainless steel, including the flex pipe (I suspect your price quote doesn't include this)

Get them to use a decent race cat (I've got a magnaflow) and a decent muffler (Magnaflow Part # 14835 is a great choice).

They can re-use the factory downpipe's turbo flange if they don't have any 3" SS flanges laying around that match up to the turbo.

Reason I say it's too cheap of a price quote is becuase the parts alone are around $300~ish just for the muffler, cat, flex pipe, band clamps used to attach the pieces of the catback together and our local exhaust shop gets their mandrel bent stainless tube for $30 per bend.

The lowest Iv'e seen a shop do a GOOD volvo turbo back exhaust was like $500. I got mine done for $850 and even that's considered a steal for the quality of parts and work.

If the shop isn't doing everything mentioned above tell them you want all of that done. If not, keep your factory exhaust becuase a crap exhaust will be worse than factory.

Also keep in mind, they'll have to weld a bung for the air pump and both 02 sensors and more than likely, you'll have to get the rear 02 sensor's wires extended about 6 to 8 inches. They should be able to splice some extra wire to the wires or else pay $50 for the extension harness from volvo.

but, look on the bright side, after you get all that done, you'll be looking at about 20~ish more HP/TQ and less turbo lag and mabey some free boost too. I got an extra 1~2 lbs of boost from mine even though the ECU is supposed to stop it at 12, my boost gauge has peaked at 14 before.

They must do something right. Each of the people I have asked where to go said to go there. And yes they do mandrel bends. This is where the hi-po people I know take their stuff
