Hey guys!
For those of you who had known, I just got back from a drive along the east coast from NY to FL a few days ago. My 97 960, now with 161k miles is doing just fine. I only had to replace the cooling fan, which I had done before I left to save time, a little coolant and, of course, my infamous struggle with the coolant temperature sensor. But, i come today with some worse news. My beige 01 V70XC, which my son drives. I think the trans is finally going at 172k miles. I went to take his car to get the inspection renewed in Pennsylvania. (Shh I live in NY but it's cheaper in PA) I drove 110 miles, no problem like always, but when I went to back out of my driveway in PA to go to the store is when I got scared. I put the car in reverse, and stepped on the gas a little. It didn't want to creep, so I let it warm up a little more. I put the car back in reverse and tried to back out and the car started shuddering, and I got a check engine light. I used my scanner and it was a cylinder 6 misfire. I shut off the car and hopped in my 300zx, which I keep up there. This same this happened on my Chrysler, before it caught fire, and I suspected then, that my luck with the 133k mile transmission was over. What do all of you think? I mean, I do kinda have the same car with parking sensors in red, but, I would like to save this one if possible. Any thoughts?
Love always,
Cynthia

Is the 960 or the Xc70 giving you a cylinder 6 code? I think the XC only has 5 cylinders.....
What was the exact code it gave? Some of the scanners have bad code map pings, so the P1234 format is best to report
My cheap scanner used to report cylinder 8 problems on my 1999, lol

Hi, sorry. I was thinking of my minivan. It's a cylinder 4 code. Haha! But I haven't driven the car since. Thanks for the speedy response though!

Could be as simple as a bad coil, Cynthia
You can swap them and see if the code moves. But first, pull the number 4 plug and see if looks funky
( Good to see the son got a promotion...

Hi! Great to hear from you! So I'm kinda stuck in Pennsylvania at the moment. I mean, the car does back up, but I am really afraid to drive it. And you're talking to the woman who went back into her burning minivan to get steaks that she had just spent 20 bucks on that morning, and the same woman who bought five, very less than new cars within the past 5 months. I just get this feeling of dread. Back when I was working for Chrysler, I had to go on a trip to a conference where we were to discuss the new sebring. They gave me an 03 Intrepid as a company car to drive there. It had 70k miles, but it was only a year and a half old. When I was on my way. I stopped at lights and the oil light started flickering. But it would go away if I revved the car. This was waaaayyy before anyone had any engine seizure problems. This ttransmission gives me that same feeling. Sorry for wasting your time with my life story, but I did pull said plug and refitted it, and the code vanished after I cleared it for a good 10 start ups and shifting into reverse. It doesnt shake as much, but it's still hesitates to move backwards. I have a lot of cars, much to my dismay, so if this one goes down, I'll drive the 740il and give him the OTHER 01 V70 XC. Thanks for reading this, I appreciate anyone who listens to my stories. Thanks!

If you had cooked the steaks on the burning minivan (less to clean up?) you would have added to your Goddess status here...
Good news on the coil/plug.
The 2001 does have a bad trans history - we have a sticky thread on it above- but you are in part of the world where it is easy to get a trans pulled and a good used one put it. These cars are worth doing that if you have taken care of it.
Are you shifting cleanly in the forward gears?
Check the Mechanics Forum for some references for good independnents in PA - there are quite a few.
