1997, good times...

Post by mydamnvolvo »

Feel free to take this down if it isn't allowed, but I have another remarkable car story from your pal, Cynthia. In 1997, my sister, in New York, went into labor. I was in Monroe Lake Shores, PA with my father's 1979 Ford Bronco. This car was ridiculous. It was fully loaded, 6.6L V8 with a 33 gallon fuel tank. It got around 6-8 miles to the gallon. I got a call that my sister was going into labor at midnight. I threw 45 bucks into the tank and hopped on I-80 West back to NY. I was driving at least 80mph and got to the George Washington Bridge Junction on the Cross Bronx Expressway, headed for the Throgs Neck Bridge. I took the exit, and thats when I heard the knocking. I couldn't stop. My sister was going into labor 2 and a half months early. I drove with two feet to keep the throttle to the floor so I could keep pressure up in the engine. I knew it had threw a rod and was now running on 7 cylinders, but I got over the Throgs Neck and onto the Grand Central Parkway. Thats when I heard it again. BOOM...knocknocknocknock. I had lost another cylinder. Now, only 30miles from home, I drove at least 95mph since this was a Tuesday morning at 1am. When I pulled up to her house, and let go of the throttle, whoosh, all the oil fell came out of the car. All I thought was, "oh well" I locked the car, weirdly and ran inside. At the time, Colleen had been driving a 1997 Volvo 960, I hopped in the car with her, and drove off. The closest hospital, 30miles back the way I came. Now, if I hadn't been driving a car that could hold itself at 110mph, my sister would've died, her blood pressure 220/105. So in my mind, the 79 Ford Bronco, and the 97 960, are alright. I think of this, today, my nephew, Marcus, is turning 19, and I drive that same 960. Oh and that bronco, is still in the Monroe Lake Shores garage.

Much love,
Cynthia

That's such an awesome story. It's neat to hear old stories involving cars - sometimes it seems like they have personalities of their own and they become a part of the family :P
If I paid attention to signs with little symbols I’d never find anywhere to park.

Thats one of them holy crap events!
Followed by sheer relief when it pulls into the driveway.
Although not in your case, a pregnant lady with a Volvo and another ride.
I would be proud of the Bronko...making it to the driveway under such stress.
Its good you never had the sense to stop and kept it powered up and nicely feathered.
