Broken hose under chassis

Post by marcusmcd »

1996 850 SW: I found a hose broken in three places that runs parallel to the fuel lines. I assume it is some sort of vapor return line since the car seems to function well without it. But I cannot locate where it should be connected to the engine. I haven't been able to identify it on any diagram I have seen either. What is it? Where should it connect?

Is it any of these hoses? https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 4&start=10

I have a broken line running along the frame, by the oil pan, that runs under the fan shroud and into the charcoal canister. Need to get to it one of these days.

I have a theory that those folks who constantly top off the fuel tank when filling end up flooding the carbon canister. This prevents the air from escaping the fuel tank when filling. The other 2 culprits are the roll over valve jamming or partially jamming (causes the same issue) or the filter in the breather pipe from the rollover valve to the outside world. Normally if the car is fitted with this it is at the top of the fuel filler pipe in a 2 piece plastic housing that can be fragile with age. Not all cars are fitted with tis filer as I understand.

Not sure what is going on here other than I'm losing it. This is the 3rd time this week I have clicked onto a thread and replied and it has ended up on a different thread. I'm going to have to double check this in future! Sorry,

The pipe is part of the emissions testing system. If you have emissions testing where you are it will prevent the system checking for leaks and lead to a fail.

You could try gluing a rubber hose over the plastic pipe to complete it

Let me be clear, the hose dangles below the car and I have NO IDEA WHERE to connect it. Fixing it will be easy enough once I know where it connects.
