knock sensor removal

Post by stinger04038 »

Having read the posts on this topic everyone says you have to remove the manifold in order to get to the knock sensor on the s70 series. I want to let everyone know with a little patience you do not need to remove the manifold. I simply took the throttle body off, removed the fan from the radiator and followed the wire up tp where it is attached to the block. With these two things removed there was ample room to get a 12mm wrench on the knock sensor and remove it from the block. It is a little tricky to install the new one as you can't see the hole in the block, but if you take a little time and feel around you'll get it. This will save you 6 hours worth of labor at a shop which can be very costly, the only other part I needed was a throttle body gasket, 5 bucks, I did clean the throttle body while I had it out. Hope this helps other members to save a lot of money and extra headaches. I did not have to buy a manifold gasket etc.

Yeah - 6 hours is government pace work - in addition, there is a lot of stuff you can put right with the intake manifold off that will save your hide.

PCV cleaning
Clean starter terminals, grounds, 12 VDC terminals, grease
Remove starter and evaluate - grease pinion and bushing
Clean all engine grounds shiny
Clean main alternator connection shiny
Check thermostat housing for leaks and deal with the nasty bolts - lubricate and replace.

ANd to cap it off, most of the time when the knock sensors code, it isnt the knock sensors.... :-(

What's crawled up tryingbe's and abscate's backsides today? First the GLT air filter, and now this?

I think it's a great tip - my PCV, starter terminals, stater and engine grounds are all fine - but I've never ever touched a knock sensor. So this is a great tip for someone who knows that there isn't anything else that needs doing besides the knock sensor.

6 hours worth of labor at a shop. I don't know if this is shop/dealer book time, but if it is I agree this is absurd.

I bolded the words to make it clear Stinger is only passing on information he believes is true. Any derision aimed at this is aimed at book times, not any member here.

That makes sense. Still, lolling on a forum is inappropriate as a reply.
