Volvo 240 Water pump

Post by Skymaster »

I know there is lots of "Water Pump" written up around, however there is nothing on really specific about installing the water pump on the Volvo 240.
i.e.: gasket, gasket sealer, what type gasket sealer to use, where to apply, sealant on the bolts etc.
How to install he pump (one person job or two)
The Heppu water pump I purchased from eEuroparts., the pump is recommended by lots of members, however the mounting hole in the casting, is not perpendicular to the face of the pump. what is wrong with the pump? bad manufacturing? or they are selling rejects?
I don't know.
I have tried three times to install the pump by my self, without help, Fist I tried to grease the gasket, dint work., try RTV on the gasket against the face of the block, did not work. I can hang the pump on the two studs and pry it up, but it is difficult to insert the other bolts, they just ruin the gasket.
Tried Aviation gasket sealer., nada!
My next try will be to glue the gasket onto the pump with "3M Fast Tack and Trim" and use thread sealant on the bolts and rev on the face of the block.
wha a pain in the #4^%^*.

On water pump side only, Indian Head® Gasket Shellac Compound can be applied, and then lay gasket over it.

OR

Aviation Form-A-Gasket® No. 3 Sealant Liquid could be applied lightly on both sides (pump and block)

OR

Aviation Form-A-Gasket® No. 3 Sealant Liquid could be applied on pump, then lay gasket over...then apply SuperLube on block side

For the last few I did, while it's been awhile, I got a gasket from the dealer, a Hepu pump, and no sealant. I just scrubbed the surface where the old gasket was until it had no visible gasket or adhesive bits. The Volvo gasket handled the awkward movements of trying to get the first couple bolts in place without ripping up, and compressed to a good seal, with no sealing compounds.

Thank you for the reply., I really appreciate it so much.
I finally got the pump (HEPU) in without any leaks., I install a new Wahler 87C . the engine overheat. the temp needle goes all the way up into the red.
I removed the thermostat and install just the shell of the old thermostat, the needle goes ¾ of the way up.
Then I replace it with a Vernet 82C, the temperature goes all the way to the red.
I guess the next thing is to replace the radiator, and if that does not do, replace the pump.
before all of this, the temp was ¾ of the way up, the thermostat was broken into pieces.
I flushed the engine with vinegar and distilled water. Could the flush clog up the radiator?
Im very hard head and I don't give up.
Thanks for all the help.
I will post what I finally find that works

With a thermostat failed closed, I know for a fact that a 93 240 can handle 25 miles or so of mixed highway and city traffic, in over 100F ambient temps, without staying in the red too much, provided the driver has enough water and salt to handle the ride.

How long does it take to go into the red, from a cold start? If it's pretty quick, you might want to verify that it's not the sensor or cluster board. I'm not sure how to go about verifying that you can good flow through the system, without compromising it, though. You'd need brighter mechanical minds than myself, for that :).

The temp needle goes up slowly, but As I removed the radiator, I found it very clog up with dirt and debris.
it is very clean now. I will be installing a new pump (Volvo OEM) I dint feel that the HUPU pump was pumping like it should.
I will post my results in here soon.
