1989 Volvo 740 GL

Hi I ahve recently purchased an 88 740 GL which has had one owner from new. The car has covered 103000 miles, with some S/H, it is in particuarly nice condition considering its age ect, what I am currently trying to find out is, should I be using any lead additive with the fuel, or is it ok , to run it on normal unleaded. Aslo, it is particuarly dificult to select 1st from stationary, plus selecting reverse is almost impossible without experiencing some grating from the gearbox, does this sound as if it is going to be needing a new cluth in the near future??????

Is the car '88 or '89? This is just curiosity as you say both.

My '87 740 ran quite happily on unleaded without any additive, so I can't see that there will be a problem. My '84 240 also ran on unleaded but that did need a slight timing adjustment.

If your clutch is cable operated the cable can be adjusted. The adjustment should be checked annually and corrected if necessary. If it is a hydraulic clutch then it won't adjust and you probably are looking at a new one.

As I know, all Volvo 740 can use unleaded petrol. Maybe you must not use 95 octane, only 98. You can find more information in this document:
