You can just remove the screw that keeps the solenoid itself inside the piece bolted on the engine. This way no need to replace the gasket.

Thanks, I did remember to order the gasket too #NeverReuseAGasket. Part gets in today. I'll probably install it over the weekend if not sooner. Will I have to clear the trouble code or will it self clear?

BTW, what's the torque value on the bolts that hold the solenoid in place? The Haynes manual doesn't specifically call out the exhaust valve solenoid, but it does cover replacement of the camshaft position solenoid and calls out bolt torque values of 10Nm(7lbft). Sound reasonable?

Part replaced. Code gone. Check Engine light is off. Did a 5 mile test drive and it didn't come back on. I'll report back if the problem returns but I think we're good!

Also I ended up checking the bolts on the exhaust solenoid and the intake with the torque wrench before removing them to see when they would turn. 7 ftlb (84 inlb) seemed a bit much for these 8mm bolts in aluminum. I worked my way up from 40 inlb in 5 inlb increments till I got a bolt to turn a bit, then I back it back down to the previous number. I settled on 60 inlb.

4 days worth of driving and no return of the code. It would have come back by now. Whenever I cleared the codes before changing the part it came back in a matter of minutes. Thanks for everyone's help!
