There is a griding sound coming from my rear wheel. This sound is very noticible and does not go away until the car is at a complete stop. The sound varies in intensity and sometimes goes away completly. My brake pads still have lots of pad so that is not it and the sounds does not dimish while braking. This started after I left my parking brake on over night. I think what has happened is the some rust ( i live in a climate where salt is used on the roads during winter and this promotes corrosion) broken free from the the perimiter of the rotor and jammed in the calipers or behind the rotor between the guard.
Any recommentations. I tried to take the breaks off so see if anything was jamped in there but the 7mm hex huts were frozen. Should I try and get the calapers off and remove the rotor?
BTW: The rotor is grooved and not as nice and shining asthe front rotors.

Actually the e-brake caliper, if that's what you want to call it is on the inside of the rear rotor and you can't see it from the outside of the wheel well. You are correct that the e-brake has something to do with it...they often rust and actually fall apart and are pushed up against rotating parts. You'll probably have to replace the rear brake components. Others who are more familiar with this will chime in I'm sure.
Btw, it's always good to list what car your talking about and the mileage along with what year and any work done in the area which might be problematic.

My car is a 2002 2.4T S60 AWD with 135,000 km.
I assume that if I can get the break loose the allan nuts that when I slide the calaper off i'll see that you're refering to.
You're not suggesting that I replace the entire caliper and piston are you? I still have limited use of my parking break but wouldn't want to have to rely on it to stop at highway speeds
Any suggestions on how to free the 7mm allan nuts which are frozen? I did not try wd-40 or any other anti-sieze spray. Is there any harm to using his near the braking components?

Can I replace the parking brake system on just one side of the car or should it be done on both?
Is it pretty straigth forward to replacethis ? Do I just need to remove the rear brakes?
I've changed the front disk brakes before but never the rear brakes or the parking brake drum system. Any advice is appreciated.

It's straight forward. If one side is gone it's probably not long before the other side goes. When it comes to brakes and suspension parts, I've always made it a habit to do things in pairs.

Two simple question for you experts.
1. I am going to pick up some axle stands to that the car is well supported before I start working on the brakes. Should I place these under the rear axle or is there a better support point
2. Can I use pliers to remove and replace the springs for my rear parking shoes or does I need the special tool

You'll need a 7mm hex wrench but for pulling the pads, a pair of pliers seem to work just fine... In regards to the jacking points on the rear, under or the rear jack on on the transverse arms as close to their attachment points as you can while still putting the jack on the head of the bolt that attaches the rear frame. You can also jack up where the regular jacks go about a third of the way up on the side of the car and then put the jack stands under the section mentioned above. If in doubt, look at this diagram (2nd one)...it's for an 850, but the same for your car: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/jackingpoints.php

I took rear rotor off to inspect the parking brake and see if if anything has broken. There was no visible sign of a broken spring or anything like that. Other then the shoes looking badly worn, everything looked like it was in working order. Problem is that when I put the rotor back on there is still grinding so for some reason so shoes must be running somewhere.
Could I have a broken brake cable? I tried to figure out how to adjust but didn't see any mechanism. I read another post which described a slot in the rotor. Are the e-brakes on 2002 S60 2.4T AWD adjusted differently or did I just miss it.
Any other thoughts?
