Hi everyone,
I am new to Volvos. I just purchased a 2002 V70 xc Cross country with 60k. I love this car. My steering wheel audio controls are not working. I bought this car from a small independant dealer with 45 day %50 (I pay) %50 (they pay) warranty. We brought the car to the Official Volvo dealer and they charged us $60 to tell us that it was broken. Like we already didn't know that. They said they could not be cetain which part it was but said it was 1 of 2 parts. Part 1 is $300 and part 2 is $450. This sounds a little ridiculous to me. Anyone have any comments on this? Does that sound right? The good thing is that if I decide to get it fixed, the small dealer will pay for half of the cost. Anyone have any insight into this? Anyone have a working used one I could buy? Also looking for some roof racks (cross members only) Any out there? Thanks Matt for creating this forum. Already found some useful info!
One other newbie question: What is the thing on the middle of dash that looks like a speaker?

Steering Wheel Audio Controls
It's possible that the "clockspring" that is the circuit from the fixed part of the steering column to the buttons that turn with the wheel, is shot. Do your cruise control buttons work?
If you are tlaking about the small grille above the passenger temp control, that is the temperature sensor for the climate control.
