Want to save rotor? Replace pads at thickness = 3 mm

Post by cn90 »

So...

Back in March 2016, about 6 months and 5K miles ago, the front pads were at 3-4 mm.
I thought I have some time.

Time went by, work/family etc. kept me busy.
The other day, the brake was making noise, grinding noise.

Sure enough the rivet in the pad (used to install the retainer for the inboard pad and protrudes about 2-3 mm into the pad material) was grinding the rotor.

I knew the rotors have seen 2 sets of brake pads, so time to replace the rotors anyway.

So, for those of you who want to keep the rotors, replace the pads when they are down to 3 mm.

Wow...3mm isn't much...at all. Especially on the front.

I read somewhere that recommended brake pads replacement is when they are at 5mm left, so i always replace mine when they are at min.5mm left.
This way you save dust boot and caliper piston from damage.

3mm is way too low.
