2001 volvo s60 idle issues

Post by 1991 gmc jimmy »

I am new here and this is my first volvo and it has been a nightmare. I only have 97,000 miles on the vehicle. It is an 01 s60 2.4t with an auto. I have a surging idle and the lights will surge with the idle, it has a new battery so I ruled out the alternator. I had the original throttle body rebuilt and it failed as soon as it was put into gear. I bought a new throttle body from fcp and had it installed by an independent volvo mech in my area. I got down the road maybe 5 miles and the surge was back. Brought it back to the mech and was told that this throttle body was no good. Sent it back to fcp for warranty replacement. New throttle body was installed and now I have the flickering lights with a light surge. I also had the maf replaced, the timing belt replaced, along with cam seals. The pcv system has been replaced also. When I cold start the vehicle it really surges and i have no power, the turbo sounds extremely loud but once it is warmed up it is ok. It runs alot better than it did before the throttle body replacement. I do have a code for the vvt and the mech told me not to worry about it right now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you continue to get throttle related error codes, even after replacing/rebuilding the throttle body a couple times, you might want to check the integrity of the wire harness and connectors between the throttle body and ECM.

If the headlights pulse in sync with the idle surges, that could be an effect of the RPMs hunting up and down. On the other hand, it could be vice versa - idle hunting do to radical fluctuations in voltage. Can you smooth the idle by giving it a little gas?

"... it has a new battery so I ruled out the alternator..."
You could still have a faulty alternator. Whether it's causing the problem is the $64,000 question. A trip to the local auto parts store for a charging system check wouldn't be a bad idea.

Also check over all of the turbo and vacuum hoses for breaks and loose connections.

If I idle it up by 100 rpms it will smooth out. I am thinking maybe a voltage regulator.

I did notice something to today when leaving from work. When it was cold start it has no power and then it stalled 3 times. After the 3rd time it sounded like it back fired then it ran normal again. I am confused.

My issue is finally solved. The upstream o2 sensor was bad. Replaced the sensor and now it is running good.

I guess you never read the codes
