2001 XCV70 Idle Issues

Post by Johnxcv70 »

Hello Everyone,

My name is john I am a new volvo owner and in love. This is my second volvo I bought within a year of purchasing my first. I know if I was going to get an xc I should have shied away from the '01 but shes mine now and with new ,coils plugs, trans flush, servo update, water pump, turbo, and upper engine mount. She will get a lot more but thats where I started to get her running again.

Now to the problem.

She runs ROUGH!!! or does she vibrate REALLY hard During idle? Tis the question of the day I am struggling to figure this out.

when I was diagnosing the "barely would run" issue I started disconnecting injectors to listen to motor sound changes just to see it I was getting spark. (per a thread I read? Said it was quicker n easier?) anyways I pull the injector closest to the air box (CYLINDER 1?) there is significant engine change. With the rest of the cylinders you don't get much change if any so I started ohming coils. 3 of 5 were bad to say the least. Ordered 5 Bosch from IPD and Installed. Now I must say almost all the wire harness clips are dry rotted and broke the little tab on them. After Install Of that and the copper core Bosch Plugs (OEM Style?) , and an oil change (castrol 0w-20). She runs 500 times better and Is peppy and loves 65 mph. However During Idle whether in gear r not P,D,N all the same. The car VIBRATES!!!!!! And I mean BAD!!!!!

When I go back And Start pulling Injectors

#1 injector disconnect
car stumbles

#2 Injector disconnect
car hesitates for a second then right back

#3 Injector Disconnect
car hesitates for a second then right back

#4 Injector Disconnect
car hesitates for a second then right back

#5 Injector Disconnect
No change In Engine sound

So This Is where I am If anyone thinks they could help that would great!

Not sure what the mileage of the car is and engine condition, so I'd do a compression test to start with. Also if you have a scanner that can read live data I'd post that.

Have a look at the engine mounts to see if any of them are broken. That can contribute to shaking on these cars. Compression test is in order. Make sure the coils are torqued to spec, they ground through the mounting bolts, so it is important to clean the bolt area

Did you check the ETM - throttle module? Mine was searching and rough and the problem was the ETM. I rebuilt it with the Spacer upgrade and it is fine now.

ok so motor mount is broken

What is a good scanner to get to read live data?

I use Torque Pro, $5.00, and a blue tooth adapter, $20.00. Can access a lot of parameters, live data, graphs. There are a lot of others out there as well. More concerning here is why there's no change when pulling the one injector, hence comp. test.

Again - look at the ETM. Mine was running tough - It burned no oil and the spark plugs were all even and correct in appearance so I skipped the compression test as I did not see this being the issue. I took out the ETM - it was really dirty and is a known issue because of design in this car. Newer XC70s use the Bosch system which is better. That said I rebuilt mine with a Sacer contactless unit and it runs excellent. You may get by with just a cleaning.

Does not sound like your MAF is bad per your description.

Also which motor mount is broken?

Compression test on this one. Burned exhaust valves are pretty common especially when running regular juice over extended periods.

The cylinder closest to the airbox is cylinder 5. ETM should call up codes so if this is the problem get yourself a scanner like an ELM327 that suits your device (Apple or Android)
