The car is 1999 V70R. On then back end of a thousand mile road trip and 80 miles from home, the arrow indicating lower gears came on. I have used 3rd gear for down hill braking on long hills for ever so I'm used to seeing this light function.
When the light came on, the car shifted from 3rd to 4th whilst climbing hills as usual but when back in traffic, it wouldn't shift to 1st/2nd without me shifting the gear lever to that position, then up to top gear, all the time, the arrow light remained on.
Car got us home safely and trans fluid showed no drop in level. I had concerns for fluid loss as we did go off road quite a bit, nothing extreme as the car is lowered (naturally !!) just a few interesting clunks and scrapes that showed no ill effects.
Next day and ever since, the trans has behaved as per normal which makes me slightly jumpy.
Any one out there have this experience ??
Thanks for reading............

Haven't had that happen, but my first thought is that it has to be heat-related if it's only happening on the tail end of a 1000 mile drive.
Perhaps a solenoid sticking when it gets that hot?
I'd start with the condition of the fluid. If it smells like an asphalt truck, it could be making things stick when they get especially hot.

Cruise and odo are good. Tranny juice smells OK-ish. Prolly time to change.

Done oil change and 400 miles. Problem's not recurred and shifting is so much smoother.
Thanks for the guidance chaps.
