2002 volvo S60. n/a ETM compatibility
I have a 2002 volvo S60. n/ a . I bought the car from a customer of mine. I had put a used engine in the car three years ago due to a broken timing belt that bent the valves. I put the original ETM on the used engine that I installed in the car . Two years after I installed the engine the ETM went bad and my later my customer put a used ETM on and threw the original away. I bought the car thinking that it still had the original ETM . How can I tell if this was tje the right ETM for the car . Dont I need the numbèrs from the original ETM to get a new one ? What do i need to go ?

Best route might be xemodex. I think its between $500-$600 and there is a core return. They also have a lifetime warranty with their ETMs.
If I paid attention to signs with little symbols I’d never find anywhere to park.

FCP is a parts vendor, fcpeuro.com. They're in CT. They're my go-to for OEM non-blue-box parts.
Ask Xemodex if they can arrange to provide the ETM and have a dealer marry it to the car normally.
The customer couldn't just slap the ETM in and drive, could they? Didn't a dealer have to marry it to the car? Therefore, can't it be assumed that it's a correct replacement, or either the dealer or the car would have rejected the marriage?
I don't understand what information has been lost if the car has a valid, working (at some point) replacement in it.
I'd say you have two avenues. You could try to obtain the paperwork for the ETM transplant (assuming a dealer had to marry it to the car) and see if the tech left a note in the file about an oddball replacement. Or, you could contact VCNA with the VIN and ask them for the details of its original ETM. Surely Volvo has record of what's supposed to be in each car.

I installed a yellow sticker ETM from another turbo, has been in the car for 2 years, no dealer programming. No issues at all. Another ETM from any NA should work for you without any dealer programming. Hope it helps.

I thought the reprogramming was to marry the unit to the car. What exactly are they reprogramming, then?

Got tp agree with doublebug. You were lucky. The programming isn't VIN specific; it's ECM specific but that's another story.
There are fewer turbo programs for ETMs than for NAs. Likelihood of catching a turbo replacement that matches is much higher than for NA though. Some ECM (engine control) versions on P2 turbos actually support both newer and older ETM firmware. Also some S80 T6 ETM firmware is shared with 2.4Ts
Most likely you have a 1 in 2 chance of a match with a 2.4T or T5 and a 1 in 5 chance with a non turbo if sourced from a similar vehicle.
