Sourcing Rebuilt Volvo Axles
At 165,000 miles, the front CVs are starting to display more play and some lumpyness under acceleration. In the past, on other cars in our fleet, I've had good luck with Axles Unlimited rebuilds but they're having trouble getting the parts to provide me with the axles for this car. I tried Raxles but can't provide them either. I prefer to get the replacement axles installed THEN turn in my cores once I'm sure the replacements are performing well. Does anyone know of a rebuilder that can come through with a quality product?

Can you believe 15,000 miles later and I still haven't replaced those axles in my wife's S80. Actually I think it's mostly the RH side. The problem is that I can't take the car out of service long enough to pull the axles and send them in for a rebuild. I found a shop in Denver that said they can do it but, there again, they said they didn't have any cores on hand and would need mine. I've thought about going out to Pick-n-Pull and get a pair of axles to send in to a rebuilder but finding an S80 with the correct axles is a challenge. Now if I had an S60 it would be a different story.
Let us know how it goes for you.

I got a used OEM set from Erie Volvo with intact boots and rebuilt them myself. It's not a terrible job and if you're careful not even that messy. Took my time doing it. CV axles will last pretty much forever as long as they are lubed and contaminant free. Can't go wrong with an OEM rebuild.

I got this kit from FCP: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... p-bks0041r
Picked this one because the boots visually appeared identical to Volvo/GKN OEM boots. A phone call to FCP verified this particular set fit my car vs. the other sets they had available. I can confirm they are a perfect replicate both in geometry and materials. The inner boot is elastomeric and the outer boot is a thermoplastic. I looked at all the local autoparts stores and they sell only generic boots for these Volvos.
I did struggle with the ear-clamps. I bought this cheap-o tool (http://www.autozone.com/test-scan-and-s ... 141501_0_0) and it was total junk. The jaws kept bending and pushing the clamp out of alignment, total garbage. Next time I need to deal with CV boot clamps I'll buy this one or something like it

Otherwise you'll need disposable gloves, some disposable towels, some degreaser and general tools. You will need snap ring pliers. A brass drift is recommended, I don't have one used a piece of mild steel rod I had sitting around. The joint inners are hard as a coffin nail, anything mild steel or softer will not damage it.
I went thru about half a roll of Scott blue shop towels rebuilding both sides. I don't have a bench vise so just rebuilt them flat on a bench.

Thanks for the info. However, I need a rebuilder that can machine the channels and install oversize balls or have some way of replacing the wear parts with factory pieces. At least one of mine has a lot of slop in it.
When you had yours apart did it look to you like the part with the grooves might be replaceable or is all some sort of welded up assembly?
