98 S70 P0264 .... (after almost nil driving six weeks)

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hey everyone, I've finally been able to tackle my subframe bushing job. They're all in and torqued, I couldn't get the 120 degree turns in, but I got almost 90. I didn't feel like bursting any arteries.

I also replaced the upper torque mount bracket (w/ OEM), upper torque bushing (w/ OEM), and lower transmission mount (w/ OEM). (The "Poopparts" failure trifecta...) I had been having horrible engine vibration for a while. Anyhow, I checked my motor mounts (one Corteco and one Febi) and my side engine mount (Febi) and they're still good. I had imagined that one of the bolts had come loose with all the movement I was having, but no, they're still solid.

I had the move the car out of the driveway to let the neighbors do some work on their yard the other day and turned the car around and drove it, it sounded like [insert poo emoji]. And that's when I heard a metal sound when turning the wheel. I'm going to chalk that one up to the horrible subframe bushings ("Poopparts") that were metal on metal... But I'm not sure if that sound is still there because I didn't get to drive the car around the block...

As soon as I turned the car on, I get this code: P0264... Immediately. I cleared it and turned the car back on. And got the code immediately again.

Of course, I go on MVS... Well, no one is writing about this code. It's not showing up anywhere!!! :o

If anyone can give me some pointers, that would be great. I am thinking about driving it to my mechanic, it needs to get inspected anyway... Just need to know what this is. I haven't driven the car much in six weeks. The Proparts upper torque mount slipping and sliding around was really annoying. I wonder if it's caused some long term problems...

The money pit ensues...

Steve, would that cause some crazy engine vibration issues?

Sheesh... I'm thinking (hoping) that I pinched something when I installed the new upper torque mount arm... Can't catch a break...

When working on the 850 California project, I removed the spark plug cover plate and found that one of the spark plug wires had been crushed by the top plate as the idiot so-called repair shop had not refitted the retainer around the 5 cables where they pass through the end nearest the distributor correctly and this allowed the cable to move to a point where the top cover crushed it.

Running with a misfire will make the engine shake like crazy.

Neil.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I'll take the upper torque arm bracket off and reinstall. I hope that solves the issue. I did notice today that my ignition coil wire had a little gash in its insulation (nothing that broke through to the wire)... That probably occurred when I had the hood latches welded a few months ago. I will double-check my spark plug wires (Bougicords installed last year) and my plugs just for fun.

I really hope I haven't severed a wire somewhere...

Those wires that run around and underneath the upper torque arm bracket, those are some pretty important wires, huh?

Here's how the engine sounds... Poor engine. I feel like I've failed you...

If only I knew how to quit you...

EDIT:
Is there any chance at all that this might be caused by or influenced by the FAE engine temp sensor in there? (I have an OEM one, I just haven't gotten around to switching it out.)

So I finally had the time to check this out...

When I had installed my new torque arm bracket, I noticed that I really had to push hard on it and the wires around it in order to get it to seat... Well, this was why.

I'm lucky I didn't sever any wires. I used good quality electrical tape around each wire, even the ones that hadn't been cut into. I know this might cause some interference issues down the line. But I'm going to wait on splicing and soldering wires for the time being. I was able to turn the car on after I separated the wires that had been cut into. No instant P0264 code. And the engine sounded like it's always sounded.

I did, however, get some smoking... Probably from extra fuel that was sent to the #2 cylinder that had the short? I drove it 5 miles to get it inspected and by the time I got to my mechanic's shop, it had stopped smoking...

If you look below, this is how the cables are supposed to be routed. Not under the torque arm bracket...

Steve, that's EXACTLY what it felt like to turn the car on after this (somewhat major!) faux pas. :) I was so worried about the fuel-smelling exhaust that came out afterwards. But it disappeared. Crisis averted!!!
