V70 Replacement Shocks and Handling question

Post by uurf »

Ever since I had my 2001 V70 auto transported from TX to CA it seems as if the handling is, um off.

At highway speeds, bumps in the road seem to introduce a yaw - even more so if the suspension is compressed (say in a sweeping turn). Generally the yaw seems to be counter-clockwise.

Also, it seems as though the stock shocks have reached the end of their service life (telltale "thunks" in the suspension). What are the replacement options? Tire Rack sells an adjustable Koni, but I've heard folks advocate the Bilstein and even KYBs (which I have on my 92 Miata, incidentally). I'm looking for a stock level of comfort but a bit more control.

thanks

Is it possible nobody has any data or opinions on shocks for a V70 in this forum?

I have an opinion about price ;-). See this thread for more.

I haven't yet replaced mine, although it's getting to be time. The shock mounts certainly need replacing. I'm getting clunks and groans from them.

I've read Bilstein HDs are what Turbo 850s (and probably 70s, but don't quote me on that) have OEM. The Bilstein Touring shocks are a bit softer, and may be OEM on non-Turbo 850s.

Let us know what you end up doing!

Thanks.

Also -- for sure replace the mounts when you do the shocks.

Thanks Matt!

I guess barring any horror stories, I'll go with the Koni's from Tire Rack. I'l probably replace the OEM P6's with another set of P6's from there, so I can double up on shipping.

I had a bad experience "upgrading" the suspension on my Miata (nutshell: the adjustable shocks good, the lower firmer springs very bad) and I was hoping to avoid the same on the V70.
