98 S70 N/A: Difference between CV joint, Ball joint, or Bearing noises

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

I'm getting some weird noise from the front passenger wheel. The best I can describe it is like a metal on metal groan. My mechanic said he can't figure it out. (I took the car to get the emissions checked out, it passed!) He says it's probably something to do with the transmission and/or with the car being cold. He couldn't find anything wrong with the suspension or the CV axle. (The CV axle boot isn't torn.) The sound started to pop up after not using the car for a bit..

- It's not a clicking sound, like the typical CV joint sound.
- The sound only occurs from acceleration, sometimes.
- The sound is more pronounced when turning the wheel to the right and accelerating.
- There is no sound when driving straight.

Car has all new mounts, front, rear, side, upper, and new subframe bushings. (All bolts have been inspected and they're all still there!) Control arms and sway ends were installed last year. Monroe Quickstruts were installed around the same time, too. Wheels are always torqued to spec. There's no real play in the wheel when I move it around.

I replaced the outer tie rod. Inner tie rod is still tight. (Unlike the Meyle driver's side, but whatever...)

This has to be a hub/bearing, cv axle, or control arm thing, right? Can CV axles go bad without the boot splitting? One thing I've noticed is that the outer CV axle boot on my Napa axle is all twisted up. Which I've never understood...

Trying to figure out what part to throw at the car... Sigh...

As always, thanks for the suggestions!

Let me know when you find the answer! My RH front side makes a groan and I have replaced everything at least once if not more. I even swapped out the IPD anti-sway bar for and OE but it made no difference. Have you checked the anti-sway bar bushes for splits? They are vulcanised to the bar and separate with age. I have also replaced all the main engine mounts with the exception of the main front one.

I have a suspicion with the anti-sway bar end links, but I have tried IPD HD (rubbish quality), Mayle HD and had the OE originally. I may yet go back to the OE now I have an OE bar back in.

Since almost everything is new, I would consider which of the new parts it could be. The quickstruts and the aftermarket axle come to mind first. Mind you they may be just fine, just throwing ideas out there. Are you sure the spring seat is still OK on that side (check the top nut)? On the axle I might do a real quick check: drop the two control arm bolts at the subframe, remove axle nut (loosen it beforehand!) and disengage the outer CV from the hub, inspect the join for noises/smoothness, give it some anti-sieze and put it back together. See if that makes any difference. Might eat up an hour of your time with lifting the car and pre-loading the control arm etc but at least it gives you some info about that part.

Groan that turns into a whir is a wheel bearing

If it changes on swerving side to side that confirms it.

Clack clack clack goes the CV

Clunk clunk clunk goes the control arm

It doesn't turn into a whir... Whew... But aw man, I just picked up some sweet Craftsman e-torx sockets off ebay!

I could only reproduce it today when turning the wheel to the right and reversing...

I thought it was "click, click, click" :)

If it's any sound, it would be a clunk... But it's so intermittent!

My mechanic is convinced it's something with the transmission and not to worry about it...

Has anyone had a CV joint fail while the boot was still intact? I'll keep an eye on this. And I'll pop the axle off one of these days and check it out. Thanks for all the suggestions!

It's possible to break up CV without breaking the boot but it's pretty ugly if that happens

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me.

When you go to replace it, do not use one of the "cheapie" hub assemblies. They often groan loudly when they're brand new.

I saw a Moog on Rockauto for five bucks less than the Timkin... :)

Can you believe this company, WJB Automotive, makes one for $25 bucks???

I'll definitely keep an eye on it, or rather, an ear on it. Thanks everyone!
