2000 Volvo V70 non-turbo.
I was driving to work this morning, and suddenly lost all power.
I know this will sound dumb, but I can't remember if the engine was still running when I pulled over - I was too caught up in trying to pull over safely and get the ignition switched off.
The oil and battery warning lights were on, and maybe some others as well.
Also dumb, but I tried to restart the car. It sounded wrong, like only the starter motor was turning or something.
At the side of the road waiting for the tow truck, I did pop the hood and have a quick look. Because the oil light had come on, I checked the oil level, which appeared to be fine.
I couldn't see into the timing belt area, but I did get a look at the serpentine belt, and that appeared to be intact.
I was on the very busy parkway at rush hour and I didn't really want to hang around and get run over, so I didn't spend much time looking.
The car is now at the shop waiting to be seen.
I don't know how long it's going to take for them to get back to me, and in the meantime I need to know what to plan for, so I'm hoping you guys can tell me if this sounds like the timing belt?
If it is a broken timing belt, it's pretty ironic.
My belt change was overdue, but I had ordered all that parts and tools I needed to replace it.
I was going to do it two weeks ago, but then I had to have some surgery. I was told not to lift anything over 15lbs or do anything strenuous for a month, so I was planning to change the belt in the second week of November.
EDIT:
Darn it, I'm sorry, I posted this in the wrong forum. My V70 is a 2000 model.
Would a mod be so kind as to move it to the correct forum?
Did my timing belt just break?

Sorry to hear. I've been there and know the feeling.
If the car is in good shape otherwise and if you plan to keep it for awhile (many years) it may make sense to get the head redone.
I opted for a replacement engine with lower miles from Erie Volvo instead. Maybe that's an option for you as well?

When my 2000 C70 lost the timing belt, I bought a 2004 C70 and turned the older one into a parts car. Same deal as you, I was planning on doing it when the weather got warmer the following month. Ugh!

It's the luck of the draw. On my "$500 experiment" car, a 2000 S70 NA, manual trans, 248K miles, I opened up the timing belt cover (four torx screws and two clips to remove the timing belt cover on the right side of the engine) and found that the timing belt was the original one for the car. The DPO (dreaded previous owner), when asked, said "timing belt?".
