Switching to sport not only changes the shift points but also the torque converter lock up points. Also it has no effect on anything in normal driving at light or moderate throttle, it only kicks in with more advanced throttle.
Many on this site have said that econ gives a harder shift and shorter transmission life. I have tried both and have not noticed any difference, but at the current gas prices I seldom go near full throttle.

I have ran on economy ever since I have gotten the car because of the gas prices. I just switched to sport about a month ago and have noticed a smoother shift. Econ can give a hard jerk sometimes when shifting. I haven't noticed too much of a drop in mileage but I have been watching it very carefully. In econ I was averaging about 23mpg with about 60% highway/40% city. Sport did seem to give a smoother all around feel for driveability.

hmmm..... :? I don' seem to have Sport option on my 2000 V70. Maybe because it's a non-turbo :?:

I think the transmissions post 1998 are adaptive transmissions. Meaning it will automatically adapt with the driver's driving style.
