2001 Volvo V70 T5 Brake light

Post by phoffman »

The brake light warning messaged appeared on my dash. I went to replace bulb and found that the holder for the bulb was not making good contact with the socket. The socket for the left side brake light is mangled and it is very hard to get to.
Any suggestions? My yearly inspection is due in October.

Use a small flat screw driver to shape/bend the contact/socket area just a little you should be fine.

Thanks for info. I guess my question is also how to remove the taillight assembly to get to that socket area? There is not enough room to get my hand thru the opening when I remove the speaker.

Have you tried to remove the socket rather than just the bulb as in this so so quality video?

From the looks of pictures 2 and 3 there are 2 nuts you need to remove for the entire tail light assembly to come off

I will try to remove the tail light assembly, thanks for link.
My hand is to big to get in the opening to push in bulb holder.

Here's a picture of the melted socket on my 2001 Volvo V70. It's hard to see and troubleshoot this problem in the car. My brake light would only work intermittently, and of course I got the infamous "brake light warning" message on the dash. I got a good used tail light assembly from local Volvo salvage yard for $35 (including bulb sockets).
