I have a 2000 S80 with 127k miles with a scary sound from the transmission. During last winter, whenever I would drive the car in snow, if one wheel (either side) loses traction and slips, I would hear a grinding / scraping sound from the transmission that would go away once the wheels were able to grip the road again. The car otherwise drives and shifts fine. What could be causing that? Is there some sort of differential lock or viscous coupling that is failing? Is it a minor problem, or am I looking at the beginning of a big problem?
Thanks,
Keith

That sounds like the Stability Traction Control doing what it should do. Lose traction at one wheel and the STC works to restore traction. When first heard the noise can be alarming.
