1997, 850,T-5 no engine mods. P0302 code set

Post by Four volvos »

Help!! I have done everything that has been recommended to others in these posts to remedy this stupid thing. I am extremely frustrated at this point. I replaced the plugs with the Bosch FR7DC, new Bosch rotor and cap, new Boucigard (sp) Volvo plug wires. After two short or long trips it resets the P0302 code with no others! I have not replaced the ignition coil. The car has 128K on it. The last time this code was set, back around 98K the Bosch FR7DC solved the problem. The car misses/runs rough. I gapped the plugs to 0.028in with a wire style gapping tool. I did the timing belt back at 72K. The only other thing done recently was a Victor Rocha rebuild of the ABS unit. I have maintained this car myself since purchase at 70K. It has been great until this problem surfaced a couple weeks ago.

What is going on?? IPD told me to take it to a shop and have it diagnosed with a VADIS unit. I talked to a local shop and all they want to do is tell me I don't know what I am doing. Their big solution was to go buy $40 worth of plugs from Volvo.

Could I have a bad cap or rotor? Never had one before. The contacts all look good, no burning, cracks etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in the SF Bay area.

Thanks

It sounds like you have changed everything there is to fix a misfire, Wires, plugs rotor and cap. The Coil only supplies the fire. The distributor does what it's name inplies. It is possible that any of these parts are faulty. (slim)

How about doing a compression check and seeing if cylinder #2 reads different from the rest. Then you will have a little more info and can continue looking outside the engine if it (#2) checks out.
