buy or no?
My old Saab just died — very sad — and I hadn't budgeted for replacing it, so I need to buy something inexpensive, and quickly. I see a 2000 S40 for sale and remember that first-year models are supposed to be riskier. But what can anyone tell me about what to be wary of, especially in the 2000? Or am I better off walking? I've contacted the seller for more details but haven't heard back.

Basic used Volvo buyer's checklist - that's my best effort. I don't know the 40s enough to comment on specifics. Maybe someone who knows will chime in.
Keep in mind a 2000 S/V40 is a very common, old car here in late 2016. In no-start condition they're worth $100. Starts and drives, $300. Nice for its age: $500-$1000, and the best 2000 S40 on the planet with maintenance records at the same Volvo dealer, 30k actual miles by an actual original owner who is a grandmother, its own Instagram account with 100k followers, and a handover ceremony attended by Madonna and Al Gore: $2000.
Don't fall in love, use your cold, logical side to evaluate each specimen you see.

I bought a 2001 for my daughter about 7 years / 50,000 miles ago. I've been using it for about the past 1-1/2 years. It'll turn 200,000 miles next week.
I'm no expert, but I think about the only difference between a 2000 and 2001 is the transmission (4-sp vs. 5-sp) and maybe some interior trim. I believe the engines are identical.
As for the car itself, it's ok.
Problem areas? Not really any that I know of. Mostly just maintenance items have been replaced.
VVT replacement, flex pipe, coils, alternator, struts & springs, fuel pump.
An annoyance is the ECC. The blower speed has a mind of its own sometimes.
Overall, it has been a very good car.
Edit: I should add that I think the prices matthew1 mentioned are spot on.

I say buy a Honda....
my 2001 is to the point that I would pay someone to take it! The car is very dangerous and NO VOLVO MECHANIC can permanently fix it, even with a VOLVO shop computer.
And no one on any forum will reply to my pleadings for help. The revs with surge unexpectedly.... I mean big time 900 to 4000 while you are at a stop sign. Glad the brakes work. There are just way too many sensors that go bad and leak. etc.... I hope this post is not too late for you. If I can get this last thing fixed, I am unloading it. Merry Christmas to someone!
