Re: Clutches pressure plates and flywheels

Post by greg850r »

So, 96 GLT sedan n/a bought after some kid put a clutch in wrong and it wouldn't release all the way. Thought I would find a bent clutch fork but instead the throwout bearing was punching past the ends of the spring fingers. It looks like the wrong one maybe because it seems to be just barely bigger than the hole in the springs. Ordered the FCP bearing, plate and disc as a set.

On the pilot bushing, there is no way the input shaft is going in the hole in the bushing as the hole is too small and there is no protruding nose sticking out past the splines like I am used to seeing on others. The flywheel shows signs of hot spots. In my goat the bolts could be re-used and it would be an automatic resurface or replace but for the small amount of torque this thing sees plus the cost of new bolts (plus the RMS is dry as a bone) I'm thinking of leaving it alone.

Ok...But OP is working with a turbo. So the kit you linked to wouldn't work.

Thanks for pointing that out, I missed it. I wasn't trying to jack the thread just thought it was a good place to put clutch info.

Looking online ive came across some 98 70'series with a manual. Thats the changeover year to a dm amirite?

Are odds in my favor to expect a sm or should I go in expecting a dm setup? Any preinspection questions I could ask to identify it prior to going out and physically looking? Ie: if its a non phase cam i5 it'd be safe to expect it to be a sm configuration? Or if it has rear mount evap canister it'd be a telltale sign for dm?
Maybe a vin range indicator?

Some findings online are not necessarily local and if its feasible to find out prior to wasting the listee time, I'd appreciate to know what to look out for in advance.

Does anyone have a 93-97 flywheel that they can take measurements of, or maybe already have the information and could provide that please?

Has to be a flywheel and not a flexplate.

Why are we STILL on this?

It's really simple.

Use the single mass flywheel, resurface it. You may have switch the two wires at the RPM sensor, you may not.
Get a R clutch, and throw bearing from your favorite dealer.
NO PILOT BUSHING.
Use whatever hydraulic that the transmission come with. I prefer new part, especially the master and slave cylinders since they are a pain to change with engine/trans in the way.

External slave cylinder = SMF.
Internal salve cylinder = DMF.

There is also the VIN number you can look up and see what exactly got switched over. I'm too lazy to do google search.

because a flywheel is needed and its not known the specs to its physical size..... because i dont physically have one.
