2002 V70 XC poor running , jancross arkansas thread

Post by JanuaryCross »

I'm a first time post'r but MVS addict since September 16th. @rookiemechanic you're my car-twin. I just bought the exact same year and model three months ago and I have the exact same problems. And I'm NO mechanic whatsoever. I am a DIY'r though. I've read and read and read this site and have made improvements - but I'm. Where near having a solid ride. I've (hear comes my mechanic girl voice) replaced, myself, the MAF sensor, upper engine torque mount, flushed the transmission (thank you RobertDIY on YouTube and former fellow Arkansas resident) and my mechanic replaced the left front CV joint. And NOW it's doing the whole sluggin up a hill thing.. I'm following your post and hope your sure-to-be-victories will help me on this crazy Volvo mission I've started. Here's to 2017 being the year we bring these Volvos back to life.

You guys need to get your own code reader do you can grab codes when they occur. That really helps intermittent diagnoses.

Januarycross..when was the last plugs were changed and are the coils original? Check and post the numbers on top

@abscate I don't know, unfortunately. There's one shop in town that carries the plugs I need and I've got five with my name on them I just need to pick them up. I'll do that today. I did notice when I replaced the upper engine mount that the ignition coils had oil around them - it looks like the oil cap got super hot at some point and melted the plastic cover (the one that covers the could and plugs that has 8 30T screws in it) in one spot. I'm scared to change the plugs for fear that oil may get inside Ugh.

Oil in the cylinders is no big deal - you actually put this in to combat 'Lawn mower syndrome'

Get the plugs out and lets have a look - that could be the entire problem.

What about the coils? Is there a way to tell if they're on their way out? I don't want to take it to the dealer - but the code Advance Auto gave me was only, "loose gas cap" - and it's not loose :/ It doesn't say anything about a failing (or failed) ignition coil.

The gas cap loose won't cause poor running. Did you actually get the P Code (P1234) or just the description? Most readers don't map the code to the correct problem with Volvo, so you need the P Code. If you have a big EVAP leak - it could be the cause of your poor running

Bad coils will not always show up by throwing a code.

Just the description :( I picked up the spark plugs and I'll install them this evening. Fingers crossed!

Oh my god. Oh my god. I was unscrewing the ignition coil and the screw broke. Then the ignition coil came out - but the rubber part stayed in! So there's just this spring thing on the end.

Just pull the rubber thing out. Grab it with some pliers. It's actually part of the coil but can be separated for cleaning and service. In fact AC Delco make replacement boots. The spring goes on the end of the coil; no big deal.

Look for hairline cracks in the body of the coil packs. If I see a crack in a coil pack I can be sure it will be the next one to fail. The spark can arc out of those cracks and cause misfires.

Oh and get yourself a code reader. All this feeling around in the dark is reminiscent of catching a blackbird on a moonless night.
