Engine Swap B5254t2 to replace a B5244T3
Engine Swap B5254t2 to replace a B5244T3
I have an 02 v70 xc which has the cracked cylinder sleeve coolant leak going on, as far as I can tell without pulling the head. I am in Montana where there are not many Volvos in the junkyards, and have a line on a B5254t2 engine from a wrecked 2005 S60, only 120,000 miles. From what I can find out I should be able to swap in into my car without any problems, anybody know for sure? Is there a list of engine progressive changes anywhere which would help? I've worn out my search button! Thanks all!

You can delete VVT ( need a new cam sprocket) easily as opposed to the reverse

Question on that.abscate wrote:You can delete VVT ( need a new cam sprocket) easily as opposed to the reverse
Can any 2.3/2.4 with vvt for intake and exhaust cams be retro fitted to become a 93 thru 97 non vvt setup as you mention above?

The intake cam is a different design on a 2005 (part number 8670354) and 2002 B5244T3 is part number 9497823 so no interchangeability with front sprocket unless you swap out the cam together with the sprocket.
Photo here shows a B5244T3 cam cover with intake non CVVT and exhaust CVVT cams. You have wider oil journals feeding the CVVT cam which would be fine using a non CVVT cam which would effectively recirculate the oil going to the cam if you screw taps into the 2 CVVT oil ports from above where the solenoid bolts on.
The cam seal has the same OD on CVVT and non CVVT so you're OK there.
You would really need to do your homework on this one.

So I might be able to take the intake cam and sprocket and the cover for that matter from the 2002 onto the 2005 and have a drop in? Turbo and sensors, etc. all compatible? Sorry but where do I look to find the answers to engine swap questions, and do my homework? I appreciate the help, it is sounding like this might work!

Seems as if it might be simpler to take the 2001+ engine down to a short block and bolt on the head meant for the year-to-make/model-series intended for use to specific needs.
Bottom line:
2001+ Block
1997 [& subsequent] head assembly
Assemble to make a complete engine.
Set parking brake and then burn rubber!

That all sounds like a good plan too, but I am of the mind to leave the head on the block that it has been happily mated to for so long. If I can get it without opening it up unnecessarily, that is what I will try first.

With engine removed head gasket replacement is not a big deal EXCEPT you will need a set of head bolts, 5 O rings for spark plug holes and the chemical anaerobic sealer for the cam cover. Afew cam seals wouldn't go astray either. Oh and about an extra 5-6 hours to perform the work in a dry place and the need to have the engine on a stand while you're torquing the head bolts.
Once you remove the intake CVVT hub on the 2005 motor see what you find in there....perhaps it will work out. As yet I haven't heard of anyone bending valves by using the wrong cam. The 2005 intake cam may not have the same grind as a 2001 because it was designed for CVVT but it will probably run the car.

I hadn't thought of the cam grind issue, don't know why not, thanks for that tip, I'll see if I can find that bit of info anywhere. . . I've got a head gasket replacement set and head bolts all ready to go.
