I used an adapter. Since the post above, Ive removed all the speakers and replaced the door drivers. I found that a couple of the original cones were blown, which would likely indicate the questionable sound. I am using a Pioneer head unit to drive just the four door speakers; the rear shelf and dash tweeters are still there (too much trouble to remove) but just disconnected. Sounds fine.

Great job explaining everything! I wish I found this before I decided to fiddle with the frames but oh well. I own a 99 s70 and the back passenger side on the deck went the other day. I went to a u pull it, and found a lightly used set and replaced both on the deck. And to my suprise there was a little mouse nest around the drivers side one (she was in storage for a year and a half before I got her up and running again). I took that out and continued replacing it.
I drove around for a few minutes, with no problems, but then the rear drivers side started sounding a little fuzzy. Could it potentially be a wiring issue?
