92 740 wagon shifting issue.........

Post by GNflyby »

Hello, I'm pretty new to the world of Volvo's and I was hoping maybe someone can answer this question for me. Okay here goes; the car shifts from 1st to 2nd fine, but she will not shift to 3rd until she reaches 3000 rpms or I let off on the gas pedal. Other then that she runs great. Thank you for any help anyone can give, Nelson. :)

Have you checked the transmission fluid? Don't only check for the quantity but also how it looks and smells. The fluid should be red and should not smell burnt.

How long is it since the fluid was changed? Old fluid will cause problems.

These are the usual first steps when auto transmissions play up.

Hi Bill, I actually took it to a shop to find out if they flush transmissions and he checked all the fluids and said they look good, and then he said it would cost $260 for the flush and a new filter, is that the norm, or should I keep looking? So, what else should I check? Thanks for your help, Nelson. :)

Not too many experts here
I believe that to be true of any forum of this type. Most of us are not experts but have had some experience of car problems. The forum works when a consensus of opinion points to a possible solution.

You acted on the reply I gave and was told by an 'expert' that that was not the problem. He then quoted a price for a job which he had told you was not necessary. I did not give my opinion on that price because I don't know the labour and fluid costs in the US.

Personally, in your situation I would find an auto transmission specialist and get his opinion. Many mechanics know only the basics about these boxes as repairs are specialised.

check the detent cable on the throttle spool, [the lower cable] for binding and stuck and rusty. it needs to be free and easy and when you pull it . you should hear an audible click when you pull it all the way out and release it as the cam drops back down in the valve body of the transmission . assuming the detent cable is adjusted correctly, as long as it eventually does shift into 3rd gear there is really nothing to worry about, as many of these transmissions developed this annoying, but not deadly problem of late shift as they got miles on them. hope this helps
