1993 Volvo 850 GLT Starts, Revs High, Then Dies

My Volvo 850 takes about 5 seconds to start, then it will rev by itself to around 3000-3500 rpm for a second, then it just dies. I have absolutely no idea what is wrong. It's getting plenty of fuel, spark, air, and compression. I just replaced the timing belt and the timing is good. I am thinking that it may be a vacuum leak, but I'm not sure.

Do you have a check engine light on or any codes? That's the first thing to check.
You could also try unplugging the MAF sensor and starting it to see if that makes a difference. The sensor may have gone out.

There aren't any codes and unplugging the MAF doesn't do anything. I also used a smoke machine to check for vacuum leaks and there aren't any.

Where did you connect the smoke machine to when it was testing for leaks?

I connected the smoke machine to the vacuum tree.

You might still have overlooked an IC connection breach. Starting down by the compressor housing and scanning over to the intercooler inlet, see if you find any splits, separated, fallen off joining connections.

The hoses seem to be fine. There is just a small split on the end of one of the hoses, but I don't think that's a problem.

That hose shouldn't be a big issue, but you should replace that soon. As long as the crack isn't all the way up to where it can leak and it's over the fitting.
Still, it might be something to consider as the problem. Definitely a possible leak.
