I mean, how do they actually attach or come off? Do they work similar to a fitting for an air tool line? Do I hold down the 'elbow' while pulling up the 'collar', or ... ???
The entire fitting will move up and down a bit, but don't seem to want to release. Every 'how-to' I can find shows a plastic fitting - these are metal (not rusted, actually a bit greasy, and I've hit them w/ a couple doses of WD-40).

You need to look at the connector from an engineer's perspective, i.e. how it was designed?

Thanks, but those are plastic - mine are metal. And the tubes coming out of the pump have a ring around them, either as something for the fitting to grab on to, or to limit travel.
Or are you saying they're basically the same just more compact? I've tried a couple different ways, but don't want to break them (and spend days waiting for replacements).

OK, got it swapped and "it's alive!". 
Was able to get the fittings undone with the "modified dinner fork" method, but discovered that I should have cut the hole a bit larger - was very tough maneuvering the lines/fittings to fully clear the ends of the outlet tubes during removal/installation. (I'll try to search out one of the better "how-to's" and add that.) I'll admit I was a bit confused with what was supposed to move on the fitting and what wasn't, but all good now. I'm also always over-cautious of breaking something because I live in a very rural area and have to order everything.
(I also mangled my right/dominant hand in an accident with a power saw about 4 months ago, and only have maybe 50% use of my fingers, just to add a bit more challenge to the issue.

The retaining ring presented no issues to me, just a very big screwdriver and a lot of tapping to turn it off and on (like a bigger version of hundreds of electrical box connectors I've installed over the years). And zero leaks on the first try (yay!). I can also add that ~5 gallons in the tank is maximum to avoid spillage; mine showed ~6 and I got just a little bit - in fact if I leaned on the car to maneuver something it would spill out, it was that close.
3 on-offs with the key was all it took to prime and pressurize.
Only issue is it's got a high-pitched whine at idle, but I'm chalking that up to buying an off-brand fuel pump through eEuroparts ($109) instead of the Volvo part ($380). And I'm OK with that.

Dave - do those fittings release with the equivalent of a fuel line tool - something that goes up into the gap between the line and the outside line - same as at the front of the car near the intake manifold?
I bought a set of fuel line tools from Advance for under 10 bucks - made it back charging widows and orphans for the service quickly.

So quick question.. I was having the same issue getting these off and didn't do enough research, does anyone know how this goes back together?
There seems to be an o-ring, clear plastic ring, a metal clip, and a black plastic cylindrical piece. I believe I damaged a few of these parts and would like to know if anyone knows where to get replacement pieces and how they go back on correctly.
