Hey guys, hope someone can help me. I have a 2001 V70 XC that won't start.
It has been having a lot of electrical issues since I got it but I am not sure if those are related. This issue right now is that it won't start and won't crank. When ignition is turned to start position, there is no cranking, no clicking ... just silence. I figured maybe the starter just needed a few good whacks but that did nothing. Next, I removed the green solenoid wire and checked it for voltage while ignition was in start position. No voltage.
So next I jumped (jumpered?) the contact on the solenoid to 12 volts from the fuse box. That gave me a nice strong crank but the engine still won't start. I have worn the battery down twice already trying to get it to start this way. I have checked all the pertinent fuses, they are all good. I have not completely checked the starter relay yet ... I am waiting for another pair of hands.
I figured that, and please correct me if I am wrong, if I was bypassing the ignition and bring 12v right to the solenoid that I was also bypassing the fuses and relay.
I don't think that it is the PNP switch because the correct gear position is illuminated on the dash. I tried the back and forth of the shifter about 20 times anyway.
I have read that maybe the immobilizer could be the culprit but there is no message about it on the message display. At this point I am assuming that it is a bad ignition switch but shouldn't I still be able to start it when I bypass the ignition since it is cranking.
I don't have much money and really can't afford to replace a part without being fairly certain that it is the problem. The electrical issues that I had mentioned earlier was the common CEM overheat issue I think. ABS stop immediately message, dash is a Christmas tree, seems like every module has an issue. This goes away once I disconnect the battery and touch the cables together to reset the system. Everything is fine after that for a couple of days although it hasn't been lasting that long lately.
Lately I would have to do it maybe 5 times a day. Trying to save the money to send CEM to Xemadex. Could that be the problem? We only have one car right now and we are a family of seven. This is a logistical nightmare for us. Any advice on how to proceed from here would be greatly appreciated.

No I don't. I have a basic OBDII code reader. I don't think it reads Volvo specific codes.

I did scan it with my generic code reader and came up with only a P0238 code which is "Turbocharger Boost Sensor A Circuit High" fault. I assume this was because I disconnected a couple of sensors on the turbo intake tube to get at the starter more easily. I was cranking the engine before I had put them back in place. Do you think that would be doing it? Should I clear the code and try again?

It's tough to diagnose multiple problems of course.
The. combined no-start and no-crank does point to the ignition switch as culprit, though. To definitively test you need to check fit voltage on all the pins on the ignition switch and see if they are correct. You can also remove it and inspect the pins fir corrosion. I might have a spare you can try, too

Okay, slow down for a sec.
When you use the starter bypass you are not bypassing the ignition switch, only the cranking terminal. The car will never start if the key is out. It will crank merrily though.
This points us back more to a failed ignition switch.

Yes, I assumed as much. I did have the key in the ignition and turned to position 2 (Drive) while I was cranking. When I had help, I also cranked while ignition in position 3 (start). Still would not start.
