Power steering whines
I have a 2005 V50 and there has been a hum coming from the engine area for some time. I originally thought it might the alternator. As the hum got slightly louder recently I investigated today and determined the hum is from the power steering pump. I haven't pulled off the inner wheel well cover yet but it definitely sounds like it is coming from where the Power steering pump is located. The hum is also unaffected by the RPMs of the engine so I am quite sure it is the power steering pump. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I was thinking to replace the pump but read elsewhere the steering rack could be at fault causing the pump to whine. Appreciate other experiences or suggestions. The steering still works fine so it is just a humming noise at this time.

You could get a turkey baster and suck as much out of the pump as you can and then refill with new fluid (make sure you use the correct Pentosin or Volvo fluid- not Dex/Merc like was used in the older Volvos) and see if that makes a difference. The pump itself could be faulty too but this would be a good place to start. How does the fluid look anyway? The original color is light green.
