Vibration at idle in 2004 XC70

Post by Laurel »

I bought a 2004 XC70 about 3 months ago which now has about 36,000 miles. When I'm sitting at a stop light with my foot on the brake, the car vibrates right up through my seat headrest. It's subtle enough that I had to get my dealer to drive the car for a while before he agreed it was a problem, but it's driving me nuts. I drove several other used 04 XC70's he had and one was similar, but the other had no vibration. The dealer replaced two engine mounts, saying the originals were soft and tend to go early. He assumes Volvo has redesigned, since the replacements are stiffer. This didn't fix it. My dealer had me take it into the Volvo dealership in town (so it could be warranteed) and they replaced another motor mount and found that the bushings on the control arms were shot. After replacing them, I feel like the vibration is even worse. Now I'm thinking it might be happening a bit while I'm driving also, though I may just be hypersensitive at this point. I did move the gearshift through P,R,N & D and found the vibration present in all, though possibly a little worse in R and D. Any ideas? I'm about ready to trade it in!

Very interesting that you have it in N. Strong chance the exhaust system is touching the body and is not 100% separated by the rubber hangers. Has to be checked on the ground, or from under a ramp, but not with the wheels hanging down.

try to budge the engine brace (on the strut towers) under the hood. It should have lots of play. If it doesn't, that is probably it. look here it shows the engine brace: http://www.vivaperformance.com/catalog/ ... cts_id=587

Yes, it will have play...and if the rubber mount is broken (in the middle of the circular metal thing), there will be even more play. If the rubber mount is broken, you could have excessive vibrations. Fubar's link is to a strut tower reinforcement that I have added to our V70. It added a bit of vibration at around 3000 rpm's....but not at idle.
