Today I decided to tackle the humming/buzzing noise coming from the rear right. First I thought it was the angle gear but I changed the fluid and the noise continued. Did some Youtube surfing and decided it was the hub.
Most importantly, this Volvo IS AWD, so it is unlike most, meaning the rear hub is different than a FWD.
Ordered the hub from O'Rileys, ended up being the wrong one. (No spindle for the drive shaft to connect to on in the center of the hub) So I checked Auto Zone and Napa and All three don't have the specifically AWD hub for the rear. They have bearings that are "compatible" but I don't trust it.
I ended up getting all the way to using a 3 hooked puller to remove the hub; also using PB Blaster. Not knowing that there was a retaining ring, I Separated half of the bearing and the hub, while leaving the other half of the bearing in the housing that holds the hub and bearing assembly. Imagine my frustration.
The retaining ring was insanely rusted.Took about an hour with PB Blaster, a flathead, and dental picks to remove it. Oh and a punch.
Anyway, now I am afraid I will have to remove the entire housing that connects the suspension to the hub and find a shop with a press to get the rest of the bearing out because I don't have one. However, even If I did that, the hub I removed still has part of the first half of the bearing race stuck on it. I'm at the point of not caring and just buying the entire hub and bearing assembly, but I can't find anywhere that sells the correct part, let alone a decent price.
Assuming I do find the correct part for my AWD, here are some pictures of my progress. I still need to remove this black line and the handbrake/e-brake cable as well as the rest of the major components of the suspension.
I removed the nut to this black cable, but I can't get it to come off and I have already banged on it without going to nuts on it in fear of breaking whatever it is.
As far as the E-brake cable, I tried to loosen it but at this point was to frustrated to keep trying to figure it out so I got a beer and put everything away for the night.
I'm sure It is easy to tell, but I know just enough to get into trouble...
Thanks in advance for any help!
Update:
I ended up breaking the bracket to the black wire, however the contents connected to it seem to be alright so ill probably and up epoxying the bracket back together when I reassemble.
I finally figured out how to get the e-brake cable off... took a while but thats just because of my inexperience.
Taking the knuckle and hub to get the bearing race pressed out of the knuckle and the rest of the race on the hub removed somehow...
Update #2:
The auto shop on base is amazing and the workers are awesome. I pressed the bearing out of the knuckle and cut the race off of the hub for free.
Now I just have to find the correct bearing. As I said earlier I dont trust the shops in town and cant seem to find a decently priced one online. Any suggestions?
Update #3:
I ended up measuring the old bearing to reference it with the auto parts stores with a dial caliper.
Approximate dimensions:
45mm inside diameter
84mm outside diameter
39mm width
Napa's bearing part # is PGRW219 for around $55.
Auto Zone had one in stock, but I did not get the part number. It was around $58
O'Riley's also had it in stock. "MasterPro" part# PT513130 It was around $57
I went with O'Riley's just because it was my last stop.
