I ordered new wheel bearing bolts. The only reason I replaced the control arm mounting bolts was that I installed new control arms a few months ago and they came with new mounting nuts/bolts.

I would agree that the old ones were OK, but I say use the new ones if you've got them and they're good quality. I always save the old nuts and bolts since there may be a need for them some day. So far I haven't used any of them though. My supply is starting to take up some space.

I see, yeah I would certainly swap them in if I had a set in hand.

On the spare bolts: Spare fasteners are great but but yeah the big ones don't get used so often. Wait until you have a couple sets of head bolts, too! Hard to justify dumping them, they are big works of metal art. I found a use for I think only one of them, to make a torque mount bushing press, the rest sit in their box waiting for a home.

I sometimes replace parts just because I have to take them off to do something else. If they are ones that will leave you by the side of the road when they fail replacing them is worth the money for me. It could be considered a waste of money but I figure that missing a day or two of work because my car is out of service is way more expensive. Even so, the car really doesn't cost me much to operate.

That's the essence of the "Preventative maintenance " strategy.

Running 5 cars with 7-9 drivers, for instance, if I need brake pads, I'll do pads-calipers-rotors. That pushes my costs up but that means no,labor or bills for at least 4 years on that car.

I agree. If the parts are close to the failure time its cheaper and less trouble to replace them early. Its knowing when that's key. That's the tough part.

I completely missed this important point

The ball joint nut and bolt is a torque to yield, or at least the torque spec is high enough that it definitely stretches.

Volvo would not sell me the bolt/nut combo without buying a ball joint or control arm. I used a 8.8 grade hardware bolt and washers and inspect it regularly. This is a critical piece of hardware so you might not want to remove the ball joint if you want to keep things kosher.

If anyone has sourced the bolt/nut combo please post

988815 bolt

987891 nut
