2006 T5 V70 Coolant Flush - How Much Coolant Can you Drain?

Post by rolvo »

When I drain my coolant via the radiator petcock and engine petcock, I don't seem to get anywhere near the 9.3 qts specified as the capacity. With the car flat, expansion tank cap off, and heaters open I only get about 4 quarts from the radiator and 1/2 quart from the engine drain. This was the same when I first drained the coolant and then again when I drained the distilled water I used to flush with. Can you only drain half of the coolant?

I drain it by running a live hose while I run coolant out the bottom. Takes about 10 minutes. Make sure you rinse the coolant mix well to,protect pets.

After you do this are you then able to load 9+ quarts into the system?

I even hooked up a shop vac to the lower radiator hose and only got another 1/2 qt. Is there still 4 quarts buried in the engine somewhere?

The trick is you only need to load 4-5 liters of coolant to end up at 50-50 mix, so I drain out water, add 100% coolant, then top off with water. On turbo models there is a brass drain cock deep, underneath the engine on the water line but I've never used it.
