What the best way to check the pump after you have it out of the car? Done the "earth the wires" out bit but not sure if it has intermittent problem Thanks

All the tests I know for a fuel pump are done with it in the car. The fuel passing through the pump acts as a coolant. Run it for too long without fuel and you may do damage.

What are the symptoms that lead you to suspect the pump?

i thought the same thing.. your better off doing a pressure test while the pump is being primed and running inline with fuel.

There are a few things you need to check prior to the fuel pump... perhaps tell us as Bill requested what it is thats happening to your car so we can give more advice!

Dead pump. rattle it and it works.
